PLOT: THE BOX (SPOILER POST)
Characters with knowledge of mythology should read the first paragraph of these spoilers. We have allocated significant spoiler space between that paragraph and the solution to the puzzle.
Characters with some knowledge of mythology will recognize the tree symbol on the box as a stylized representation of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Eight of the nine worlds are represented by the eight globes of various materials. A diagram of these worlds according to Norse cosmology can likely be found in a book in the library. Those who find it, or who know enough to know which world each of the globes represents, will not that Jǫtunheimr is absent, though an indentation for it remains.
PUZZLE SOLUTION BELOW
To solve the puzzle and open the box characters will first have to work out this step, and then place the globes representing each of the nine worlds in their appropriate places in the star map. On the other side they will note that again the absence of a place corresponding to Jǫtunheimr, which will provide the final clue to the opening of the box. Each of the marbles which corresponds to the eight worlds represented is made of a material which is related in some way to those worlds. Asgard is gold, Midgard is volcanic stone, and so on. Jǫtunheimr, by this logic, must be ice, which should clue characters in to the purpose of the labyrinthine channels on top of the box and the hole drilled into it.
Only by filling that hole with water and, by some method, freezing it, thereby causing the water to expand and crack the stone of which the box is made, can the seal be broken and the box be opened.
